Have you seen some trash on the ground and picked it up, then thrown it away? Most of us have done that at one time or another because we want to keep our areas looking clean and nice.

Before there were programs to protect the planet, there was Theodore Roosevelt. In his days before becoming president, Mr. Roosevelt traveled to many parts of the western United States. It bothered him that a great deal of land was being destroyed because it wasn’t being cared for. Also, there were shortages of some animals, like the bison, because there were no limits on hunting back then.

Mr. Roosevelt enjoyed hunting, but he knew that there had to be limits so that the animals wouldn’t become extinct. He also knew that ranchers needed to do a better job with their cattle herds so that the grasslands would be able to grow.

In 1901, when he became president, Mr. Roosevelt wasted little time using his power to protect the wildlife and public lands. He created the U.S. Forest Service and . . .
